Background

Gawler Place is being upgraded as part of developing the Rundle Mall Precinct as Adelaide’s premier shopping destination. To ensure that Gawler Place remains an attractive destination where people shop, visit and spend time the upgrade is seeking to balance pedestrian, cycling and vehicular traffic.

The proposed design includes kerb-less wider footpaths, greening to create shady walk ways, public seating, lighting, public art and activation areas.

The new design will provide a more enjoyable and attractive thoroughfare for many people’s daily walk and encourage people to spend more time in the street.

The partial closure of the road will help create a more vibrant and pedestrian friendly environment.

    Project background and information

As part of The City of Adelaide (CoA) 2016-2020 Strategic Plan and 2016-17 Integrated Business Plan and Budget, $7.85 million has been allocated for the redevelopment of Gawler Place.

In 2010/11 a Masterplan for Rundle Mall was developed to guide the future direction of the precinct to become one of South Australia’s premier retail destinations. Gawler Place was identified as one of the first projects for redevelopment.

Gawler Place is a key link to the transport corridor of Grenfell Street, the new tram stop on North Terrace, the recently completed ANZAC Memorial Walk on Kintore Avenue, the cultural boulevard of North Terrace and the Riverbank precinct.

As a vital connector for these key city destinations, Gawler Place is in high-demand from both pedestrians and vehicles. The quality and function of the street is in poor condition and needs to be upgraded to meet increasing demands, improve the Mall precinct and align with the high quality of Rundle Mall.

The Gawler Place Upgrade proposes to establish a contemporary, pedestrian-focused link, connecting to the heart of the Rundle Mall Precinct. The upgrade will reinforce Gawler Place as a smart, green, attractive and safe destination as well as reinforcing the link between the Riverbank, the cultural precinct of North Terrace, the transport corridor of Grenfell Street and the wider CBD.

The concept design will include new paving, lighting, tree planting and seating.
