40km/h speed trial in Hutt Street & South East Precinct

Over the last year, Council has implemented a series of initiatives in the city’s south-east residential streets and along the local main street, Hutt Street, to make them more people-friendly. We have reduced pedestrian waiting times along Hutt Street, upgraded the Hutt Street/Wakefield Street intersection and increased the free City Connector bus service on Hutt Street to every 15 minutes.

We are also trialing a 40km/h speed limit to improve accessibility and safety in the area.

The 40km/h trial is one of Council’s projects that aims to make the city’s south-east more people-friendly and to increase the sense of the community, creating a “village atmosphere”. Lower traffic speeds not only improve road safety, but also improve the environment for all street users. The project is aligned with Smart Move, The City of Adelaide’s Transport and Movement Strategy 2012-22, which aims by 2022 to Reduce speed limits on City streets with special emphasis on residential areas over time.

    As a result of the feedback received during this consultation, Adelaide City Council resolved to discontinue the 40km/h trial along Hutt Street and the South-Eastern precinct.

    While the trial was successful in reducing mean traffic speeds and volumes, the consultation feedback demonstrated that Council needs to take a more holistic approach when implementing reduced speed limits in the city. More details of the feedback can be found on page 152 here.

    The Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure approved Council's application to remove the 40km/h signs, and on Friday 3 October 2014, Hutt Street and the surrounding residential streets reverted to 50km/h.
