What is wrong with the Adelaide Aquatic Centre (AAC)?

The AAC is rapidly approaching the end of its practical life. Projected capital investment in the centre over next 10 years could be in the range of $14M to $21M depending on scope.

Major works areas include: dive pool, 50m pool boom, eastern grandstand, spa, sauna, steam room, changerooms and services. While these works would address the condition of the asset they would not necessarily enhance services or reduce the high operating costs.

Why is Council undertaking community consultation?

Council is committed to consulting with the community and stakeholders to hear their views with respect to the future planning for the facility. Specifically, the key features that should be prioritised to best meet the current and future needs of the community.

How will the feedback I provide about my needs in relation to the Aquatic Centre be included in the final Needs Analysis report?

Your feedback will be incorporated into the final Needs Analysis report.

How does the Needs Analysis for the Aquatic Centre relate to AFC’s Draft Proposal to build a facility on this site?

It will inform the development of their detailed proposal for an integrated facility and will assist Council in assessing their proposal. It will also inform Council’s future planning for the Aquatic Centre.

Is the Needs Analysis only considering the needs of city residents?

The needs of all users and potential users of the facility will be taken into account. This includes those who live in the metropolitan and country areas as well as city residents.

If there is a strong demand for extra services and facilities, will the Aquatic Centre be expanded?

There are no plans to expand the footprint of the Aquatic Centre, however, Council welcomes all views of what facilities and services should be provided. For example, indoor and outdoor pools, waterslide, etc.

Have local schools and sporting clubs been consulted about their use of the Aquatic Centre?

No, they have not been consulted yet. All key stakeholders will have the opportunity to provide feedback.

Is there a possibility that the Aquatic Centre may have to close in the near future?

No. There is no plan or need to close the centre at this time.

Could it last in its current state past two years?

Yes, with ongoing routine and preventative maintenance. The centre has an ongoing maintenance budget.

Will Council privatise the Aquatic Centre?

No decisions have been made by Council about the future of the centre. There are no plans before Council to close or privatise the centre.

I am an existing member of the Centre. Will the doors close with no warning and is my membership safe?

Your membership is secure, and the Aquatic Centre will not close without warning. We will continue to provide current services and will keep you informed about the future direction of the Aquatic Centre.

Is Council looking at traffic management, access and car parking for the Centre?

We are aware of the various demands for parking in and around the Aquatic Centre. Car parking and traffic management is therefore an important element in the development of any future plans.

Will my personal information remain confidential?

Yes. All personal information gathered through this consultation will remain confidential.

    What are the next steps?

The consultation results will be provided to Council by 31 March 2020 (refer to timeline) and will inform the finalisation of the Needs Analysis.
