Background

City of Adelaide identified Melbourne Street as one of our priority main streets for revitalisation and to support this is developing comprehensive plans including the preparation of the Melbourne Street Master Plan. As part of this process, City of Adelaide has been trialling initiatives that aim to add vibrancy and support activation of Melbourne Street and change perceptions of the street from an arterial route into the city to a precinct destination.

When the Temporary Footpath Extensions (TFEs) initiative commenced, it was decided to maintain the closure of Bus Stop 4 and establish a TFE in front of Himalayan Kitchen and nearby businesses. TFE increase the space available for pedestrian movement, provide additional outdoor space for nearby businesses to use and improve the amenity of the street through on street greening in planter boxes. Bus Stop 4 was originally closed as the result of the Botten and Bowser development which saw the development site extend into the traffic lane during construction, which forced the closure of Bus Stop 4.

City of Adelaide is seeking to reinstate Bus Stop 4 in the city direction and identified 2 options for the reinstatement of Bus Stop 4. Both options 1 and 2 will be semi-permanent as the exact location of Bus Stop 4 will be reviewed again once the Melbourne Street Master Plan is underway which will see changes to kerb lines and other urban design features which may impact the bus stop design.
