Will this proposal affect the Adelaide Central Market?

The Adelaide Central Market is not subject to the proposed revocation and will not be redeveloped. Redevelopment proposals for the Central Market Arcade should not negatively impact on buildings or activities of the neighbouring Adelaide Central Market.

The redevelopment of the Central Market Arcade site provides the opportunity to grow the market offering with expanded and complementary retail and market activities connecting to Victoria Square.

What does Community Land status mean?

Under the Local Government Act 1999, all local government land (except roads) that is owned by Council or is under the care, control and management of Council is classified as community land. Land that is community land cannot be disposed of, i.e. sold or transferred, unless it has been excluded from this classification or revoked.

What is going to be built on the Central Market Arcade site?

Council has worked collaboratively with stakeholders and considered the ideas and aspirations from Our Market District – the right ingredients for the future, to develop the vision, objectives and guiding principles for the Central Market Arcade redevelopment.

The vision, objectives and guiding principles were endorsed by Council in December 2016 and are provided within the Revocation Proposal.  These outputs will inform the redevelopment.

The form of the redevelopment will be subject to the outcome of the Expression of Interest/ tender process which will seek developer interest in the site.  It should be noted that there will be further engagement opportunities over the life of the project.

What are the next steps and associated timing?

The next steps and indicative timing for the Central Market Arcade redevelopment are as follows:

    • Commence consultation: 23 January 2017
    • Complete consultation: 10 March 2017
    • Council to consider consultation results: April 2017
    • Release Expression of Interest: May 2017

    When will development begin?

Council is targeting commencement of works on the Central Market Arcade site by 2020 to drive exciting change within this important part of the City.
