Project Update
Following assessment of several factors, including community and trader feedback, the decision has been made to not proceed with implementing compact, personal shopping carts for use in the Adelaide Central Market.
The sentiment and inclination for use by regular shoppers was not sufficient to warrant the implementation, and the Adelaide Central Market will instead focus on increasing visibility and promotion of its existing free trolley hire model to support those that would benefit from using a trolley.
Community Engagement
From 25 March 2024 to 26 April 2024, the Adelaide Central Market and City of Adelaide was seeking community feedback on whether to introduce a compact shopping cart at the Adelaide Central Market and if so, under what circumstances.
Who we spoke with
Feedback was received via an online survey that was completed by 264 respondents which included regular shoppers, infrequent shoppers and Market traders. Intercept surveys were also conducted within the Adelaide Central Market on weekday and weekends to survey shoppers.
How we engaged
Engagement included the following materials and methods:
What we heard
The engagement undertaken indicates there was not strong enough support by regular shoppers to warrant the implementation of carts within the Market. You raised concerns around congestion, shopper safety and the risk of abandoned carts - as well as the impact on your overall shopping experience. Of all respondents, 52% of respondents were unlikely or very unlikely to use a shopping cart if provided, with 63% of respondents already bringing your own cart.
What if you want to use a cart?
Shoppers are very welcome to bring their own compact, personal shopping carts to use while shopping at the Market. The Market Stall also provides free trolley hire and pull-along trolleys for sale, as well as a range of different sized bags to assist with shopping.
