Notice is hereby given that Council at its meeting of 11 May 2021 resolved to close a portion of road, known as Chesser Street between Grenfell Street and French Street, Adelaide, to improve pedestrian amenity, safety and to increase vibrancy in Adelaide’s emerging laneways.

The closure will commence in the second half of 2021 in conjunction with the streetscape upgrade. Further updates will be posted here as they occur.

The City of Adelaide hereby gives notice that it is proposing to permanently close a portion of Chesser Street between Grenfell Street and French Street, Adelaide to improve pedestrian amenity, safety and to increase vibrancy in Adelaide’s emerging laneways - see below:

Proposed closure of Chesser Street from French Street to Grenfell Street

Pursuant to the section 32 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, the City of Adelaide is required to undertake public consultation when proposing to close a road as a through road for motor vehicles.

Background

Council has received a request from the owners of 77 & 95 Grenfell Street to permanently close a portion of Chesser Street (between French Street and Grenfell Street to traffic. The closure would allow for this section of Chesser Street to be upgraded (see Chesser Street proposed concepts), which would be funded by the owners of 77 and 95 Grenfell Street.

The potential upgrade would enhance the recently introduced shared use zone by improving conditions for pedestrians, especially the visually impaired and those with accessibility issues. The upgrade would also increase vibrancy in Adelaide’s emerging laneways.
