Can I still use the City Skate Park?

The City Skate Park will remain open for normal community use until it is formally closed, which is anticipated to occur at the beginning of 2015.

Who owns the City Skate Park?

The site of the existing City Skate Park is leased by Adelaide City Council from the State Government. The actual skate facility including all the associated facilities (e.g. toilet, lighting, etc) was constructed by Adelaide City Council with funding support from the State Government, in 2000.  A second stage was constructed in 2003.

Why is the City Skate Park closing?

The University of South Australia plans to construct a new building on the site of the existing City Skate Park. This building will form part of the City’s new health and biomedical precinct along North Terrace, which includes the new Royal Adelaide Hospital.

When will the City Skate Park close?

The lease to Adelaide City Council for the site will terminate on 18 June 2014.  However, the University of South Australia is not likely to require access to the site for the construction of a new building until the beginning of 2015.

Will the City Skate Park close before a new one is constructed?

Given the timing of the closure and the time it takes to properly plan, design and construct a new skate facility, it is highly likely that there will be a period where there is no skate facility in the City. This timing will also be heavily influenced by the availability of funding.

Where will the City Skate Park be relocated to?

No site has been secured for the relocation of the City Skate Park. Council has identified two sites that it believes are worth further consideration. They are:
1.    Narnungga (Park 25) (opposite the new Royal Adelaide Hospital) between Port Road and the existing sports fields; and
2.    Tulya Wardli (Park 27) (directly across the rail lines from the existing site on the riverbank side).
Part of this consultation process is to identify other potentially suitable sites.

How much will it cost to build a new skate park?

Based on best practice interstate and overseas, Council estimates that it will cost approximately $3 million to provide a new facility that reflects a capital city quality. 

Has Council budgeted for the relocation of the City Skate Park?

Council believes the existing City Skate Park is in a good location and has been a very popular and successful facility. The decision to close the City Skate Park was made by the State Government to support the expansion of the new health and biomedical precinct for the benefit of all South Australians.

The timing of the announcement meant Council had already developed and consulted on its 2013/2014 Business Plan and Budget.

As such, Council has not made any budget allocation in its current and long term financial plans for the relocation of the City Skate Park.

There will be opportunities during the January school holiday period to provide feedback whilst at the City Skate Park.  Council will also have people attending a number of Skate Board Australia run events during January and February 2014 to capture your feedback (lookout for people wearing ‘Your Say’ t-shirts). The dates of these events are:

Sat 1 February 2014 – 2pm to 4pm
Sat 22 February 2014 – 10am to 12noon

What happens to my feedback?

All feedback received by the 24 February 2014 will be compiled into a City Skate consultation report.

This report along with future consultations will be used to inform decisions around the look and location of a new skate facility.
