For the purposes of the engagement, a ‘playspace’ is defined as an outdoor area of public space, with or without play equipment specifically intended for free unstructured children’s play. The space can include playground equipment, large areas of open space, landscaping, or natural features.

‘Nature play’ is generally regarded as unstructured outdoor play in a natural setting. Research across the world has found that this type of play is essential to the physical, mental and emotional health and well-being of children. 

Immersion in nature has also been associated with a number of health benefits for children, such as improved cognitive function, increased creativity, and improved interaction with adults, reduced attention deficit hyperactivity disorder symptoms and enhanced mental health and emotional well-being. 

Through nature based play, unique sensory experiences can also be offered, which is often important in forming creative and imaginative play. It is this type of play where children will usually spend most time interacting with other children.

The Playspace development will be funded through Council’s 2016/17 annual Capital Works budget.

Adelaide City Council will lead the delivery of the design for Glover Playground East in consultation with the community, key stakeholders and external partners including adjoining Council’s, state and federal government agencies, schools, community groups, developers and organisations. Once a plan has been finalised, the improvements will be constructed during the 2016/17 financial year with the new playspace opening in early 2017.

The Draft Children’s Play Action Plan has nominated Glover Playground East as a local playspace with nature play elements that are integrated into the wider Park Lands.

 As well as nature play elements, the concept design also includes open space, recreational facilities, new structured play equipment, a formal entrance point, additional amenities, inclusive play elements and increased disability access.

Due to the busy nature of Wakefield Road, sections of fence or barriers will form part of the design for safety reasons, as required.

The unnecessary removal of trees will be avoided, however if a tree is determined to be in poor health and/or condition after a full assessment by a qualified arborist removal may be required.

If trees are removed additional tree planting will be implemented to account for any tree removals.

Some vegetation such as low shrubs may need to be removed to open sight lines into the playspace.

Glover Playground East will be closed during the construction of the new playspace and is planned to occur in early 2017.

Council has undertaken a number of actions to date to implement appropriate measures to fully remediate the environment and ensure there is no risk of further exposure. The results will be carefully taken into consideration for all work conducted in the space.

Meet with Staff   An information session will be held on Wednesday 27 July 2016 between 2.00pm and 5.00pm. Staff will be on site to answer any questions and take feedback including collecting feedback forms

All feedback forms, submissions or correspondence will be acknowledged either by email or in writing so that you know your comments/feedback has been received.

Your feedback is important and will be used to inform the design of the proposed project. It is anticipated that the final plan will be presented to the Adelaide Park Lands Authority and Adelaide City Council for final endorsement in late 2016.
