Hindley Street Footpath Extension Project Update

The City of Adelaide has identified Hindley Street as one of four priority main streets for place renewal through the Mainstreet Revitalisation Program (MRP). The Hindley Street Footpath Extension Project was developed in 2021, with the project aims reinforced through community consultation and stakeholder engagement which was conducted in April 2022. The following objectives for the Footpath Extension Project were:

  • Address pedestrian safety issues and increase the walkable space in selected areas where congestion occurs by widening the footpath
  • Move outdoor dining furniture off the footpaths into the Footpath Extension areas
  • Enhance street aesthetics through greening with low level planter boxes
  • Provide new spaces that present opportunity for curated community street activations
  • Test the practical impacts of kerb alignment to inform long term improvement, planning and design.

Trial Locations

Three trial locations were determined utilising a range of criteria including safety, design and feedback on recent issues. The trials were conducted from November 2021-November 2022, with evaluation determining whether the extension would remain, be altered or removed. A further trial location was identified through stakeholder request in September 2022.

To remain in place

Hello Harry (corner of Hindley and King William Streets)

October 2021

The trial area at was largely unused and this caused significant traffic congestion.

The Footpath Extension was removed 16 December 2022, and the left-hand turning lane was reinstated for the continuation of the trial. A further 12-month extension of this trial area will now occur.

Red Robin Café (101 Hindley Street)

October 2021

Due to the change in business mix, the timber parklet section of trial area became unused and required new levels of maintenance outside of the initial agreement. The mural section proved successful and was reconditioned in Jan 2023.

The timber ‘parklet’ structure at that site was removed on 12 January 2023. A mural artwork that forms part of the footpath extension will remain in place in front of 99 Gang Social (99 Hindley Street).

Hindley Street Music Hall (149 Hindley Street).

Evaluation not completed as installed late in the project

The new extension aims to address safety issues relating to congestion around access and egress of audiences attending performances

Additional outcomes of the Footpath Extension Project

  • Has been a catalyst for positive engagement with new stakeholders to the street i.e. Hindley Street Music Hall
  • Has provided accurate and real time information to inform the Hindley Street longer term concept plans
  • Addressed the pressing safety issue of large numbers of patrons spilling onto the street at the end of shows at the new Hindley Street Music Hall
  • Builds confidence in Council’s commitment to the street through relatively quick and visible changes.

Future Consultation and Review

Additional feedback will be collected over the next 12 months and the trial will undergo further review in November 2023.
