Hindley Street Revitalisation – Concept Design Release

We are seeking your feedback on the Concept Design for the Hindley Street Upgrade.

Project information

Hindley Street is the City of Adelaide’s premier night life and entertainment precinct. It is an important east-west spine, connecting the CBD to the west end of the city, with laneways running north-south connecting to the Adelaide Railway station, Riverbank and Central Market precincts. Hindley Street was last upgraded in 1999 and caters for 8 times more pedestrian traffic than cars at peak times.

This upgrade will provide a high-quality pedestrian environment and experience, by putting people first through design features to create shade, widen footpaths, and create a safer pedestrian environment.

Concept Design Principles

Stakeholder input has been integral in developing this Concept Design.

In 2022, a series of Design Principles was developed from consultation with community. The community were asked to identify and rank a series of design features that were important to them. You can find the Design Principles here.

The Concept Design has been developed in line with these design principles, and with direct feedback from key stakeholders in the precinct (through the former Lord Mayor’s Round Table for Hindley Street).

We believe the Concept Design balances a wide range of stakeholder needs and preferences and allows flexibility to respond to the changing dynamics of the street (e.g., the difference between day and night) while still meeting the project objectives to improve pedestrian amenity and upgrade infrastructure.
