Project Update

From 18 October 2023 to 15 November 2023, City of Adelaide sought community feedback on two proposed wombat crossings on Melbourne Street located at the:

  • Eastern end of Melbourne Street adjacent to the Grand Apartments
  • Western end of Melbourne Street in front of the Ronald McDonald House

Who we spoke with

Feedback was received via an online survey that was completed by 32 respondents who primarily lived in metropolitan Adelaide, who visit, commute, work or own a business within Melbourne Street.

How we engaged

Engagement was primarily undertaken via an online survey through the Your Say page on the City of Adelaide’s website. This page also included FAQs on wombat crossings and concept designs. A hard copy information pack and survey was available at the City of Adelaide Customer Centre, Libraries and Community Centres.

There was an option for the community to also provide feedback by calling the project team or by submitting a written response.

What we heard

The engagement undertaken indicates that there is strong community support for wombat crossings on Melbourne Street for pedestrian safety and accessibility. This is consistent with the community sentiment from the previous engagement undertaken by City of Adelaide within the area.

Respondents indicated a strong need for the installation of the western wombat crossing by Ronald McDonald House, with some advising that the need for this wombat crossing was greater than the proposed eastern crossing.

Concerns identified included meeting the needs of cyclists at the wombat crossings and looking at reducing speed limits on Melbourne Street for safety. A small number of people were concerned that wombat crossings would decrease safety due to driver behaviour.
