Call for Expression of Interest

September 2020 Update

Earlier in 2020, we held an expression of interest for a third party to deliver a CBD-based Men’s Shed at the Joinery on Franklin Street. Although there was a lot of interest, we unfortunately did not receive any formal submissions within the period.

Despite this initial set back, Council were still supportive of this project due to the positive feedback we received and have since been assessing other ways the project can be delivered for the city.

In August 2020, a $30,000 budget was included in Council’s Integrated Business Plan and Budget to construct the Men’s Shed. We have been working with a small group of community members and service providers to develop a draft concept plan, which we hope will receive the necessary approvals for construction towards the end of this calendar year 2020.

We also have the beginnings of a Men’s Shed Committee with three volunteers confirmed and beginning to develop their constitution. They have all agreed that this shed will be open to everyone, meaning it will be a ‘Community Shed’. Details on how this will be run in a practical sense will be further developed in coming weeks and months.

See below for further information.

Background

Men’s wellbeing is a concern for Australian communities. The Australian Federal Government’s National Male Health Strategy 2020-2030 recognises the usefulness of Men’s Sheds to improving the health outcomes of men and boys.

An Adelaide Men’s Shed will provide opportunities for men of all ages and abilities to gather informally in the City, in a space and way that supports them to connect and be purposeful. The Adelaide Men’s Shed will foster a positive and encouraging environment where men of all ages and abilities can tinker, talk and take on a DIY project.
