What happens to my feedback?

All feedback will be collated and incorporated into a report.
This will be used to make amendments to the proposed mobile food vending guidelines. The guidelines and report will be presented to Council for their consideration and endorsement in April 2013. Results of the consultation will be available to view on the site so please stay tuned.

How do I know my feedback has been received?

What is the mobile food vending fee?

Currently there is no fee for the trial mobile food vending permit.
As part of the proposed guidelines, the fees for mobile food vending would be $607 plus GST for the Summer Permit, and $404 plus GST for the Winter Permit. The permit fees have been determined from the cost of Adelaide City Council resourcing to administer and support the program and Environmental Health Services support.

When do the current trial permits expire?

Current permits have been extended to 30 June, 2013 to allow for the completion of this engagement process.

How many permits are there?

52 permits have been provided under the trial project. Not all of these permits have been utilised regularly.
The number of mobile food vending permits provided from July 1, 2013 will be capped at 50.

Where can vendors trade?

Currently the distance a Mobile Food Vendor can trade from a fixed food business of the same food type is 25 metres. Under the proposed guidelines this distance is increased to 50 metres.

Mobile Food Vendors can set up within 50 metres during the operating hours of a fixed food business if the mobile vendor has their written agreement.

There are specific guidelines outlining where the vendors can trade and these can be found in the proposed guidelines on page 4-5.,

Does Adelaide City Council reserve spaces for vendors?

No, Council does not reserve locations for mobile food vendors or coordinate locations for vendors.

What health guidelines do vendors have to follow?

Permit holders are required to comply with all health and food safety aspects of their entire operation as contained in the Food Act 2001 and Food Safety Standards.
As part of the application process, mobile food vendors must include Proof of Notification of a food business from the local Council where the majority of food preparation and food handling occurs.
The Adelaide City Council Environmental Health Services Team also conduct regular and random inspections.

How will vendors be chosen?

In the proposed guidelines it is recommended preference is given to:

  • applicants using sustainable packaging and processes, including the use of South Australian produce.
  • applicants offering a unique experience or product to customers.
  •  applicants presenting a well-designed, creative, artistic set up.
  • renewing vendors who utilise their permit regularly.

What happens if vendors don’t comply with the guidelines?

Council may conduct unannounced inspections of vendors to determine compliance with the conditions of permit, Local Government Act, the Food Act 2001 and Food Safety Standards.
A Mobile Food Vending Permit may be cancelled or amended if the permit holder fails to comply with the permit conditions outlined in the guidelines.

Can vendors automatically renew their permits?

Permit holders will have the opportunity to renew their permit every six months, a maximum of twice before being required to reapply in general applications. Current holders of the trial permit will need to apply in general applications for the mobile food vending permits commencing on July 1. The trial permit cannot be renewed.

Do vendors have to tell Council where they operate?

Under the current pilot program, it is not compulsory for vendors to let Adelaide City Council know where they are trading each day.
As part of the proposed guidelines, Mobile Food Vendors will be required to notify Council of their vending locations.

If I don’t get a mobile food vending permit are there any other opportunities?

Yes. The mobile food vending permit is not required for you to trade as part of an event.
Trading can still occur as a temporary food stall at events or markets as arranged directly with the event or market organisers.
