When and where did the trial run?

From 1 December 2014 to 30 March 2015, Council trialled a weekly collection of residential kerbside green organic bins in North Adelaide.

During the trial, residents in North Adelaide could place their organics (lime green lid) bin on the kerbside for collection every Monday until 30 March 2015. All other aspects of the waste and recycling collection service remained the same.

Why did we run the trial?

Council currently provides a fortnightly organics collection service. Half of the contents of an average household waste (red lid) bin is food waste or garden plant material.

The purpose of the trial was to help determine if a more frequent kerbside organics collection service increases the amount of food waste diverted from waste bins. The trial will assess whether a weekly organics collection can help us to achieve targets in Council’s Waste Management Action Plan 2011-2015 by diverting more organics from the waste (red lid) bin to be recycled to produce nutrient-rich compost.

  • To recycle 50% of kerbside waste by 2015 on the way to 60% by 2020; and
  • Increase participation in kerbside green organics services to 25% by 2015.

Community Feedback and Evaluation

During the pilot North Adelaide residents were invited to provide their comments to assist Council with the evaluation of this project. Initial comments were sought during December 2014 and then post pilot comments in March 2015. The feedback provided will assist to inform us of the community’s views on Council’s green organics services and their likely usage of a weekly green organics collection service.
