What is contra-flow cycling?
Contra-flow cycling is when cyclists are permitted to travel two-way in one way streets, allowing cycling in both directions.
What work has been done to develop the contra-flow concepts to take into account safety?
Council has worked with the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure to produce concepts for contra-flow cycling. The design aims to inform drivers to expect two-way bike traffic, and includes pavement markings and signs. A number of cyclists already ride two-way in these one-way streets, without any crashes recorded, so the movement is just being legitimised.
The one-way streets all have low traffic volumes and vehicle speeds which make these streets suitable for contra-flow cycling.
Contra-flows are used in many cities and countries with no increase in crashes recorded or reported.
Where has contra-flow cycling been already implemented?
Contra-flow cycling has been successfully implemented in various cities in Australia including Melbourne and Sydney, and in other countries including the United States and England.
What is a wombat crossing?
A wombat crossing is a raised pedestrian (zebra) crossing, where vehicle drivers must give way to pedestrians when they cross.
What types of projects can be funded through the Residential Street Development Program?
Examples of potential projects include landscaping, protuberances, street furniture, artworks, lighting, play equipment, community gardens, wider footpaths and any other innovative ideas the community would like to see implemented in their local street.
