Remember that compostable bags (provided free by Council) are the only bags that can be placed in the lime green-lid organics bin. ACC provides free kitchen caddies to help you transport your full compostable bags to the bin area without leakage or spills.

In Council, organic waste from the lime-green organics bin is taken by truck to Jeffries Composters. The Jeffries website will take you to a selection of videos about composting: http://www.jeffries.com.au/about-us/video-gallery

Plastic bags contaminate the food waste and cause problems at the composting facility. “Degradable” and “Biodegradable” plastic bags are also unsuitable for the green bins, because these do not break down into a suitable form for the Jeffries composting process. Please do not put plastic bags in the lime-green lid organics bin.

Free, certified compostable bags provided by Council are suitable to place in the green waste bins.

• - Place recyclable items in the yellow bins.
• - Place organic waste (food waste and organic materials) in the lime-green bins (see below for more information).
• - The Zero Waste SA website is a very useful place for details about how to recycle: www.zerowastesa.gov.au
• - Obtain a free yellow recycling basket and an organics and a free food recycling kitchen caddy with compostable bin liners to
  use in your apartment.  Some are available in the bin area of apartments, or City Realty Office, Ebenezer Place, and from Council’s customer service centre located at 25 Pirie Street; and
• - If you run out of compostable bags for the organics and food recycling kitchen caddy, you can get more at no cost.

Remember – don’t put plastic bags in the yellow recyclables bin or the lime-green organics bin. Plastic bags contaminate the recycling and the green organics. If you carry your recycling to the bin area in a plastic bag, please just empty it into the recycling bin and then put the plastic bag in the waste bin.

Alternatively, plastic bags can be saved up and taken to a participating supermarket (e.g. Coles Grote Street) for recycling. Please check with your preferred local supermarket to see if they also have a “Soft Plastics Recycling Service” or check with Zero Waste SA www.zerowastesa.gov.au

Electronic waste, or 'e-waste' can include all electronic and electronic products that are no longer wanted or useful. Computers and computer equipment including printers, scanners, keyboards, mice and monitors as well as televisions are the most common form of e-waste. Other e-waste can include DVD and CD players, stereo and sound systems, photocopiers, faxes, digital cameras, game consoles and mobile phones.

Please use the free, ongoing, e-waste drop-off locations services provided across the Adelaide metropolitan area or Council’s hard waste service. Here are details of the location closest to Adelaide:

Any resident of Adelaide can attend these drop-off points and householders and small businesses don’t need to be located within the council area.

Items that will be accepted for free include:

• Televisions analogue, LCD, flat screens
• Computer monitors
• Computer towers
• Printers, scanners, keyboards, mice

Other electronic items may incur a charge. There will be an increasing number of free services opening up in Adelaide in the coming months, so there is no rush to attend these sites. These services will be ongoing.

Garden East Recycle Right Apartment Pilot

Council will review your feedback to inform how we communicate and support the Garden East community while we implement the Pilot. We will provide information updates to residents, owners, managers and other key stakeholders during and after the trial to keep people updated on the progress of the pilot.

All feedback forms, submissions or correspondence which provides a contact address or email will be acknowledged either by email or in writing so that you know your comments have been received.

We will review the outcomes of the pilot and determine if we need to make any changes.  At this stage, it is likely that the service will continue as Council’s preferred service for the Garden East Apartments and the Townhouses.

Also, keep an eye out in mid-2014 as Council is likely to be consulting on Council-wide policy and guidelines for waste and recycling.
