Give us your thoughts on a request from Illuminate Adelaide to host a major art exhibition in the Grand Pavilion in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga (South) from Monday 4 July 2022 to Sunday 28 August 2022

Project description

We would like your feedback on a request from Illuminate Adelaide to host a major art exhibition in the Grand Pavilion in Victoria Square/Tarntanyangga (South) from Monday 4 July 2022 to Sunday 28 August 2022. Total occupancy (including bump-in to bump-out) would be from Monday 23 May 2022 to Sunday 11 September 2022.

This major art exhibition would be a ticketed event, and the setup would see the return of the Grand Pavilion to Adelaide which in 2021 premiered Van Gogh Alive the Experience at 88 O’Connell St. The new exhibition would be supported by front and back of house zones with a modest food and beverage offering and associated amenities for audiences at the site.

The applicant has described that the exhibition would:

  • further Adelaide’s position as a centre of innovation and digital transformation & engagement;
  • result in significant attendances across the proposed exhibition dates during what is traditionally a quieter time of year for the Adelaide CBD; and
  • enhance the cultural offerings available in this part of the city, and support the local economy, restaurant and business owners by its location in the precinct.

Background

Under the City of Adelaide Park Lands Management Plan the criteria for when public consultation is required includes when a proposed event/activity will occupy a significant portion of a Park for more than four weeks (including bump in and out) and/or is a new event application that would have significant impact on the Park Lands or community. In these instances Council will be provided with the event management approaches and the outcomes of a 21 day public consultation prior to seeking Council approval. Council reserves the right to refuse to grant a licence for the use of the Park Lands for an event should the impact be considered too high and would be unable to be satisfactorily mitigated.
