Development Update

In March 2019 Council shortlisted developers to move through to Stage 2 of the process, which requires the developers to provide detailed proposals for consideration by Council. Selection of a preferred development partner is anticipated by the end of 2019. Negotiations with the selected developer may continue into early 2020. Council is committed to delivering a fiscally responsible, timely development that delivers public value.

Activation Update

In May 2018, the City of Adelaide consulted with the community to hear their aspirations for the short-term activation and long-term development of 88 O’Connell Street. The comments received indicated a strong desire to see the site activated in the short term. Since April 2018, Council has run a successful event and activation program.

Most recently the Wild Goblin Garden ran during the April school holidays and was enjoyed by over 2,000 families.

Council also supported the North Adelaide Rare & Classic Show in April by creating a fun and exciting kids activation zone, as well as managed attendee car parking on the site. Over 3,000 people enjoyed the kids’ zone over the afternoon.

Eighty-Eight O’Connell is currently celebrating History Festival by sharing some stories of North Adelaide through a display of giant books.

As work continues to select a development partner to undertake the long-term development of the site, Council is re-evaluating how short-term activations are delivered onsite, in particular, ways in which the site could be activated more often.

The City of Adelaide is seeking Expressions of Interest (EOI’s) from parties that can create an activation program at 88 O’Connell Street for a period of up to two years. The offering should seek to bring people together, facilitate community connections and contribute to economic vitality. Click here for more information.

The EOI has opened today 23 May and closes 5pm, Friday 14 June.

In addition, Council is currently investigating a number of parking options for the site and will continue to provide further updates on the development, activation EOI and parking.
