Adelaide pretty much has it all!

by Turngold, over 4 years ago

Over the last few weeks I have been to two (three) amazing concerts at the Adelaide Town Hall and one in Pilgrim Church. The first, our fabulous Adelaide Symphony Orchestra with the incredibly gifted Australian violinist Grace Clifford. Then last Saturday we went to Pilgrim Church to hear the Adelaide Chamber Singers perform works by Thomas Tallis, directed by Graham Abbott. This choir is truly world class; it's on a par with the Cambridge singers, the Tallis Choir, etc, all those internationally acclaimed choirs. I thought they were better than the Choir of King's College Cambridge, which I also enjoyed... Continue reading

    Engaging with culture

by Monica, over 4 years ago

I am fortunate that the City of Adelaide attracts International and new migrants university students with whom I teach. With many cultures present in the classrooms, we often engage in rich cross cultural conversations, from which we are all the richer. I love those occasions where I am invited to their homes and am humbled by their level of hospitality. This experience of engaging first-hand with their personal stories enriches my life and theirs, their art and literature. When they come to my home, they are so overjoyed that they have finally come into the home of a 'local' person... Continue reading

Rock n' 'roll ain't noise pollution

The invention of the wheel produced one fundamental benefit (there are obviously others) for me...the invention of the turntable...and therefore an ability to play records and from there, a lifetime appreciation of music!

Music (particularly loud, brash, and bold music) makes the world go round; it makes it worthwhile getting up in a morning (other than work of course).

Without music, life would lack meaning. I have enjoyed buying records, buying CDs, downloading MP3s for as long as i can remember (and i am hitting the mature stage of life).

A bonus of living in Adelaide and working in the... Continue reading

    Arts + culture = living & growing

As a child, dance took me to a happy place; I did jazz and modern dance and felt so free and empowered when I moved my body to music and choreography. I also loved the few ballet productions and musicals I attended as they exposed me to the magic of live arts at that age.

In my teenage years, I attended a performing arts high school and was part of the theatre program. Acting was so therapeutic, and a wonderful creative avenue to explore and channel emotions, and to tap in to myself; it made such a difference to my... Continue reading

    Indulgent therapy

by Emina, over 4 years ago

My entire life has been beautifully sound-tracked by all genres of music, however music's biggest impact on my life, parenthood and my wellbeing was witnessing my daughter Leila learning to play the violin, over a period of two years. Every single lesson I had the fortune of hearing from my chair in the studio was a walk through the magical world of beats, notes, instruments (which seem to have personalities of their own) and learning. Indulgent therapy it became. I now have a deeper understanding and better appreciation of music’s intricacies, and the contribution it has made to me.

    There's always another chapter...

I have always loved books. They have been a constant companion – from childhood through primary and high school at Uni and now in adult life, there is such great joy in finding a comfortable spot with a cup of tea and a great read. It doesn’t have to be a solo venture though, some of my fondest memories of my children’s early years is the joy of reading to them in bed at night. Introducing them to Hairy McClary, The Cat in the Hat and the Magic Faraway Tree – just to name a few. The best thing about... Continue reading

    Live Music Concerts

by LisaK, over 4 years ago

Going to live music concerts is something I know is good for my wellbeing. Something about being in a large venue, surrounded by people who I share something in common with, singing along as one to favourite songs, feeling the vibration of the music through my body. There's nothing else like it. It's both a communal and personal experience. I always come out of the venue on a high and feel great for days after. And if I've shared it with family and friends, that's even better.

    Happy Memories

by JMW, over 4 years ago

Every winter from when our kids were 8 and 10 for at least five years, my husband would read to us as a family after dinner. We would have the open fire burning and all sit around as he read the Harry Potter series in all the voices. It’s a beautiful family memory that we all treasure.
