Adelaide Writers' Week

Adelaide Writers’ Week has been part of the Adelaide Festival Program since the inaugural 1960 Festival.
Adelaide’s iconic literary festival brings together some of the world’s great writers and thinkers for a week of readings, discussions and debate.

For more than 50 years Adelaide Writers’ Week has created a place where writers can connect with the community in a beautiful Park Land setting.

In 2012 the Adelaide Festival Corporation proposed for the first time to use the memorial area of the Pioneer Women’s Gardens using temporary shade sails within the gardens, including the memorial, to improve visitor amenity and reduce impact on grassed surfaces.

This was a great success and improved congestion and over-crowding issues previously experienced at earlier Writers’ Week events. The improved site layout and new infrastructure will be the model used for the 2013 event.

The 2013 event will again present readings, panel discussions and ‘Meet the Author’ sessions as well a new focus on children’s literature. All elements of Adelaide Writers’ Week are free for the public to attend.

Council is committed to creating a vibrant city full of exciting and popular cultural and artistic events.

The Adelaide Writers’ Week event is Australia’s largest and most internationally respected writers’ festival where some of the world’s great writers and thinkers meet for a week of readings, discussions and debate.

The Adelaide Festival, of which Writers’ Week is a major element, receives world-wide recognition and media coverage that helps to showcase Adelaide and South Australia to a global audience.

The event attracts approximately 2000 visitors per day over the 7 days of the event.

The only areas of the park that will be closed to the public will be areas required to be fenced for the safe installation or removal of event infrastructure. This will only take place when it is required to ensure the safety of the workers and general public during the set-up and pull-down periods. At all other times access through the park will not be restricted.

The event will be responsible for restoring the park to its original condition at the end of the event.
