What is the proposed recreation adventure facility?

    The commercial operator is seeking to develop a high ropes adventure course, open to the public on a fee for service basis allowing people to take part in an obstacle course through the tree tops.

    Will this facility damage the trees?

    The proposed course would be installed without damaging the trees and will utilise world class technology in safety incorporating a range of suspension lines, bridges, flying foxes and climbing obstacles set amongst the existing trees, ground plantings and the South Park Lands creek.

    Techniques proposed to protect the trees and the biodiversity of the site include:

    • No drilling through trees;
    • Structures designed to allow trees to grow unrestricted; and
    • Regular monitoring of the health of the trees by an independent arborist.

    Where will the facility be located?

    The area in the south-eastern woodland of Kurangga (Park 20) has been identified as the optimal location for this activity with the existing mature trees.

    The specific location proposed is between the Petanque Club, Kurangga BMX tracks and the South Park Lands Hockey and Tennis Facility.

    How much area will the adventure course occupy?

    The aerial space required will cover the equivalent of approximately 16,000sqm of ground area, with public access to be retained at ground level at all times, excluding approximately 60sqm of ground space.

    When will the adventure course be constructed?

    Subject to this consultation process, endorsement of the lease agreement will be sought from Council to enable a development approval process to proceed including consideration by Council’s Development Assessment Panel.

    On gaining all relevant statutory requirements, construction of the facility will be able to commence.
