After our extensive consultation process in March and April 2022, we developed a draft Climate Action Plan 2022-2025 and Climate Policy to support the City of Adelaide's Carbon Neutral Strategy 2015 - 2025.

The Climate Policy and Climate Action Plan have been shaped by the thoughts of over 300 members of our community and will help build on our previous successes in climate action, as well as accelerate new climate action within our own operations and the community.

The climate is changing, and the science is clearer than ever on the ways that human activities are negatively impacting the world around us. Last year the International Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) released its latest five-year report on the physical impacts of climate change. You can see a summary video by clicking here.

The City of Adelaide has committed to playing our part in the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, whilst fostering economic prosperity, liveability, and wellbeing, particularly within the context of our recovery from COVID. For us, this predominantly means more energy efficient buildings generating and using renewable electricity, a shift to low emission transport, and reducing waste to landfill.

    Our path to date

    • In 2015, the City of Adelaide adopted an aspirational target to be a carbon neutral city by 2025.
    • The City of Adelaide and the SA Government partnered on the Carbon Neutral Adelaide Action Plan that ran from 2016 to 2021 and included 104 actions to progress carbon neutrality for the city.
    • The City of Adelaide's community greenhouse gas emissions fell by 21% from FY2007 to FY2020 - with a shift to renewable electricity sources playing a major part. This is despite a 41% increase in population and a 45% increase in GDP over the same time period.

Key outcomes from the last five years of action can be found in our one-page Recent Climate Achievements by clicking here.

On 19 April, council staff presented your feedback to Elected Members at a committee workshop along with the short video above. As stated in the video, more than 300 people have contributed to the engagement process and it’s clear that climate change is a hot topic and the community wants Adelaide to become an all-electric, easily accessible, green city. The results of the consultation were summarised in this InDaily City Mag article after the committee meeting. Committee meetings with Elected Members are video streamed, the discussion from 19 April can be viewed online from 1:09:10.

In May 2023, Council endorsed the Climate Action Plan 2022-25, following the conversations we had with you and the suggestions we received.

The Climate Action Plan 2022-25 is now available to download at Carbon Neutral Adelaide | City of Adelaide.

The Plan documents our ongoing effort in four themes:

    • An electrified city
    • A mobile population
    • A green and resilient community
    • A leading Council

The 2020/21 and 2021/22 Community Emissions Inventories are also now available for the public to explore at Tracking city carbon emissions | City of Adelaide.

We can be proud that city-wide emissions have been decreasing, while the city itself has been growing. Between 2007 and 2022 financial years our residential population grew by 41 percent and Gross Regional Product increased by 58 percent.

Over this time, greenhouse gas emissions decreased by 26 per cent.
