Give us your thoughts on a proposal to close a section of Solomon Street between Rosina Street and Burnett Street in the City of Adelaide
Update
Following consultation, this section of Solomon Street will remain open and will be upgraded, and Solomon Street will be designated a ‘Shared Use Zone’ (where pedestrians will have the right of way over vehicles) with a 10kmh speed restriction applied.
Project background and description
Pursuant to the section 32 of the Road Traffic Act 1961, notice is hereby given that the City of Adelaide is proposing to permanently close a portion of Solomon Street between Rosina Street and Burnett Street, Adelaide to improve pedestrian amenity, safety and to increase vibrancy in Adelaide’s emerging laneways.
Since 2018 a small portion of Solomon Street between Rosina Street and Burnett Street has been closed to support construction of the Sofitel Hotel and Luminesque Apartments. As motorists have now adjusted to this arrangement and found alternative ways to access surrounding streets, it is the intention that this portion of Solomon Street be closed permanently. This would allow for this section of road to be upgraded.
The upgrade would include the removal of the kerb and watertable, new paving, greening and lighting, subject to further investigation. This would present opportunities for activation of the area including events and outdoor dining.
