Consultation has concluded
The purpose of the trial is to address safety and amenity issues by increasing the walkable space through selected areas of the street. The approach is to widen the footpath in some areas and alleviate ‘pinch points’ along the street.

Three temporary footpath extension areas have been identified in consultation with associated businesses and SAPOL. These footpath extensions will see congested outdoor dining furniture move off the footpaths into extended on-street areas. Each of these areas will be edged with planter boxes to provide safety from passing traffic and to contribute an element of on-street greening with low-level plants.

When you talk about Hindley Street, the first thing that comes to most peoples minds are the adult venues with their large outdoor video billboards showing scantily clad women moving in provocative ways. The public record shows that these venues have breached on many occasions - and continue to breach - the Advertising Standards with little recourse from local council. Their large multiple video billboards take up much of the visual space on the street. Anyone who uses Hindley St at any time of the day is subject to these highly sexualised images which are not permitted to be shown on day time television, yet are in clear view of any child or young person going to/from school. The research is solid - exposure to sexualised and pornified advertising has a range of negative outcomes... Women are de-humanised, they promote sexist stereotypes and result in poor body image and mental outcomes for young people. We need to reclaim the public space and stop the commercial interests of these venues taking precedence of the wellbeing of the community. An easy and immediate way of making Hindley Street a more family friendly, safer and visually pleasing place would be to completely remove these video billboards. C'mon Adelaide its 2022, lets get with the times!
I lived in the CBD for six months and I can say with confidence that cars are the scourge of the city. Trying to get from my apartment to the grocery store would take three times as long as it needed to, exclusively because I had to wait for cars at every crossing. If cars were taken off select streets, Hindley included, it would make life so much easier for residents and would attract people back into the CBD. People used to pay big money to get to Europe where cars are banned in a lot of urban areas. However, now international travel is not so attractive, and there is a market for vast pedestrianised urban areas. Places designed for people, attract people. It's not rocket science.
