Background
Adelaide is home to a diverse range of cultural boulevards, bustling main streets, laneways and neighbourhoods.
In 2020 City of Adelaide identified Hindley Street, Hutt Street, Melbourne Street and O’Connell Street as priority main streets for an intensive program of Main Street Revitalisation.
Place Coordinators were appointed as single-point-of-contacts for each of these main streets in March 2021, and commenced a process of targeted data gathering and stakeholder engagement. What we heard from the community informed the Vision for each street and the development of Master Plans and an ongoing program of activation with initiatives implemented to add vibrancy.
Updates on the Main Street Revitalisation Program have been provided to Council during this time.
Current Status
The delivery of the Main Street Master Plans is now being progressed through Council's Infrastructure team according to the priorities and budget allocations set by Council as part of the annual Business Plan and Budget process.
The 2023/2024 Business Plan and Budget includes an allocation of $2.4 million for the delivery of the Hindley Street Detailed Design, with an indicative forward estimate within the Long-term Financial Plan for Hindley Street of $12.6 million for construction occurring in 2024/25 and 2025/26.
Additional indicative funding allocation to progress detailed design and construction of the other priority main streets have been included within the Long-term Financial Plan.
Further community consultation will take place for each main street as they progress to detailed design.
Place coordinators will continue to work with local communities, traders and stakeholders to deliver an annual program of activations and initiatives that add vibrancy and contribute towards the shared vision of each street.
