Give us your thoughts on the functional and creative lighting design for Moonta Street!
Project Update: January 2020
Works for the creative and decorative lighting in Moonta Street was successfully completed in January 2020 and officially opened on 24 January 2020 to coincide with the Chinese New year celebrations. To view the media release 'Moonta Street to glow with new creative lighting' click here.
Project Information
The City of Adelaide, with support from the State Government, will upgrade the functional and creative lighting in Moonta Street as part of the Chinatown Reinvigoration Plan.
The purpose of the upgrade is to enhance and position Moonta Street as the core of Chinatown through creative and culturally sensitive statement pieces of lighting and artwork.
The project team have been working with property owners, business owners and precinct groups to formulate the current design.
The purpose of this engagement is to seek feedback from the community prior to undertaking the installation of the lighting design, which seeks to position Moonta Street as a destination with a strong day and night presence for local people and tourists to enjoy.
Located within the City of Adelaide’s Market District, Moonta Street is central to the expanding area of Asian themed restaurants and retail outlets in the city. This public space was historically identified as the focal point of the Chinatown district. The capital investment in reinvigoration will be undertaken in two stages. The first stage will be the priority works of functional and creative lighting and the second will be the streetscape upgrade.
Although Moonta Street is still identified as a multi-purpose street, it primarily functions as a pedestrian-priority walking street or a mall with increasing activation of outdoor dining and food outlets. Moonta Street provides very limited access to vehicles, with bollards restricting access to a substantial portion of the space and most of the vehicle activity occurring in the Southern section.
