At the meeting of 11 August Council noted the results of the public consultation for a shared use zone and associated works in Coromandel Place, French Street and Chesser Street and approved the lodgement of an application to the Commissioner of Highways for Ministerial approval to implement a shared use zone in Coromandel Place, French Street and Chesser Street. Council also approved the removal of two loading spaces in Coromandel Place and four loading spaces in Chesser Street and the installation of planter boxes to add greening, and the widening of the travelling lane and create a chicane effect.

Approval from the Minister was received on 18 August 2020 for the introduction of the Shared Zone and associated speed limit. Work on the creation of the Shared Zone will commence as soon as possible.

Project Information

Council has been requested by some stakeholders within Coromandel Place and Chesser Street to create a ‘Shared Use Zone’ for the precinct, aimed at improving pedestrian amenity, preventing property damage and addressing road safety concerns.

The principle objective of a ‘Shared Use Zone’ is to provide an area where pedestrians have equal rights with motorists, who can use the ‘Shared Use Zone’, but at a greatly reduced maximum speed of 10 km/h.

The Shared Zone proposal includes:

  • Resurfacing Chesser Street;
  • Removal of the loading zone spaces on Coromandel Place and Chesser Street between French and Pirie Streets;
  • Placement of planter boxes to create a “chicane” effect on all three streets and add greening;
  • Placement of road murals to draw a motorist’s attention to the different road environment and assist in slowing motorists.
