Project Information
Following an initial consultation in 2018, some amendments have been made to the Sturt Street West Greening proposal. These include the addition of two more trees and the removal of pedestrian refuges from the original design. Council is now seeking your feedback on the revised concept which includes the following;
- Kerb re-alignment on O’Brien Street, Little Gilbert Street, and the eastern side of George Court
- New garden bed protuberances including understorey planting for additional greening
- Installation of up to 18 new street trees to match existing plantings
- Extension of selected tree pits to provide room for tree growth
- Proposed garden beds – subject to allowances of the project budget
- One new car parking space outside 164 Sturt Street
Background
As part of our commitment to greening and sustainability, Council has committed targets to increase tree canopy across our City. The Sturt Street West Greening project extending between West Terrace and Whitmore Square involves planting additional street trees in passively irrigated garden beds, increasing the tree canopy from 13% to 21%. Council will also add garden beds with low growing plantings to increase street amenity. Kerb re-alignment will improve accessibility and safety. There will be no changes to cycle lanes and no loss of car parking spaces along Sturt Street.
How will the works affect me?
This project will enhance the street’s presentation and pedestrian experience; and improve safety while not adversely impacting traffic movement and existing car parking arrangements. There will be some traffic disruption and noise while works are underway however all efforts will be undertaken to minimise disruption. All services will be maintained during the construction phase.
