We have received an application from Events South Australia for the use of Victoria Square / Tarndanyangga for the Tour Down Under Tour Village and Expo to take place from 19 January to 27 January 2013. The 2013 event will be the 15th year of the Santos Tour Down Under in South Australia and the event organisers are proposing to host a 15 year celebration in Victoria Square / Tarndanyangga on Saturday the 19 of January 2013.

Before council can grant a temporary event lease we are required to consult with the community as it may affect their access to the Park Lands.

    The Santos Tour Down Under event was first staged in Adelaide in 1999. The event has grown year on year to now become the largest cycling race in the southern hemisphere.

    The week-long event brings the top WorldTour professional cycling teams to race on the streets of Adelaide and regional South Australia each January. Some of the very best in road cycling have competed at the Tour Down Under during the previous 14 years of the race. Tour de France winners Lance Armstrong, Oscar Pereiro, Alberto Contador and Carlos Sastre have all raced in Adelaide, alongside Australian stars such as Stuart O’Grady, Robbie McEwen, Cadel Evans and Allan Davis.

    The Santos Tour Down Under is a festival of cycling, with a range of associated events and festivals that create a party atmosphere across South Australia. Amateur cyclists can also get involved in the event by taking part in the Breakaway Series, this gives people the chance to ride part of a WorldTour race route.

    The race typically starts and concludes with Adelaide city street circuits; with Stage 1-5 being held in regional areas of the state. The event provides a significant contribution to the state's tourism industry and showcases the attractions of South Australia to the world through global television coverage.

    Council is committed to creating a vibrant city full of exciting and popular cultural and artistic events.

    The Santos Tour Down Under is a world class cycling event which forms part of the UCI WorldTour of professional cycling. It was the first cycling event outside of Europe to be included in this prestigious series.

    Adelaide and regional South Australia receives world-wide media coverage, including television, through the hosting of this event. The event attracts between 7-800,000 spectators over the 8 event days each year and approximately 40,000 of these spectators travel to South Australia from interstate and overseas specifically to view the race.

    The Tour Village and Expo provides the centre of the city with colour and excitement as well as a providing the public with a community space where they can engage directly with the event, teams and cyclists.

    Events South Australia will be responsible for minimising impacts on the Park Lands by following Council’s Standard Operating Procedures for Events in the Park Lands.  The event will be responsible for restoring the park to its original condition at the end of the event.
