Background

Research into our existing tree canopy and changes over the last seven years indicates our tree canopy has increased. The number of trees in streets, backyards and in the Adelaide Park Lands has also increased. However, the canopy cover is area specific and varies from different parts of the city. Some areas of the City have more canopy cover than others due to the type of urban development that has occurred over time, with the north-west CBD quadrant having the lowest canopy cover of just 6%. North Adelaide (east side), which has a higher proportion of residential homes with gardens, has the highest canopy cover outside the Adelaide Park Lands, mostly likely because the landscape is spacious for larger trees to grow. The largest net increase in the number of trees between 2015 and 2022 was also recorded in the eastern urban area of North Adelaide.

We will be using data to inform the Urban Greening Strategy together with ideas, comments and feedback from a range of stakeholders and the community.
