UPDATE:

Dear valuable stakeholders, the initial engagement has now concluded. Thank you for your comments and emails regarding this project.

We are in the early stages of developing a Master Plan for the future of Victoria Park and keen to hear your ideas for ways to improve the experience of the park.

You have been invited to participate in this initial engagement because you are the local experts! You have a close association with the park as a nearby resident, business or current lease or licence holder (such as a sporting group or operation within the park itself).

Your valuable feedback will assist the consultants in completing the draft Master Plan which will be released for wider community consultation at a later stage. Please provide your thoughts by 5pm Monday 29 August 2022 using the discussion board below!

Background

Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16) is an important local and regional open space and the venue for a number of major events.

On 15 March 2022, Council noted the advice of the Kadaltilla / Park Lands Authority to support the development of a new Landscape Concept Plan for Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16), to consider and address the following:

  1. Lack of trees and shade, particularly, but not exclusively, at the northern end of the park around the bitumen motor sport track and historic grandstand
  2. The need to provide a hospitable and attractively landscaped environment for a future, hotter climate
  3. Cultural landscape and social values of the park, including the associative values attached to the motor sport track, horse-racing, cycling and other contemporary uses
  4. Remnant native plant and animal habitat and original vegetation
  5. Many informal and formal uses of the park
  6. Limitations on tree plantings imposed by soil contamination
  7. The desire for an inspiring and sustainable landscape.

We have taken this on board and are currently developing a master plan for the park.

The previous master plan dates to 2008 and was instrumental in seeing improvements and investment in the park. This new master plan will help to build on the park's existing strengths and qualities to create an open, green space for all to enjoy.
