Help Council develop guidance around the creation of new public open spaces in the city

Project Update

During the consultation phase we sought comment on the availability and desirability of new parks located within the built-up areas of the City and North Adelaide. The feedback identified many existing open space issues and highlighted general support for the creation of new open spaces, particularly in areas where the provision and access to open space is currently poor. You can view the submissions received by clicking here.

On 26 March 2019 Council approved the Public Value Principles of the Shaping Streets and Green Spaces project. You can read the full report by clicking here (refer page 4). The Principles will form the basis of decision-making when Council considers the creation of new open spaces, particularly when private developers seek to vest such land to Council. The Principles will be supported by a set of evaluation criteria (currently under development) that form the assessment benchmarks to support Council’s decision-making and ensure that any new proposed public open spaces are fit for purpose and an asset to the community.

Project Information

We are seeking your feedback on new open spaces created through the construction of new residential developments.

New residential developments are required to either provide open space as part of their project or pay the State Government a monetary contribution toward the creation of open space by Council. However, there is currently no guidance as to where new open space should be created or what form this space should take. With the city’s population estimated to increase from 22,000 in 2016 to 30,000 by 2026, the demand for publicly accessible open space is likely to grow.

Council is looking to enter into a conversation with the community about new open spaces and street improvements to help shape their creation and influence policy. Please read the Consultation Handbook which provides information on the purpose and expected benefits of the project.

We invite you to provide a comment about the creation of open space in the city and/or complete the short questionnaire below.

Council staff will be contacting precinct groups, resident groups and developers to have conversations on this matter.
