Project Update

Following assessment of several factors, including community feedback, reinstatement of the stop near the pre-existing location has been selected as the reinstatement location and the works are planned to be implemented shortly.

Reasons why Option 2 was chosen over reinstatement at the other location option include;

  • The width of the footpath and level of activity at the selected location will ensure the risk of footpath congestion is low, accessibility is good and path users are not impeded.
  • The impact to on-street car parking will be less than the other option considered.
  • Being reinstated at the pre-existing location, regular bus users will be familiar with the stop location.
  • The absence of adjacent obstacles such as veranda overhang and posts, eliminating the risk of strike by bus vehicles.

Community Engagement

From 18 October 2023 to 15 November 2023, City of Adelaide was seeking community feedback on the reinstatement of Bus Stop 4 on Melbourne Street. The community was provided two location options to consider:

  • Option 1: Further towards the city approximately 80 metres from its previous location in front of LJR Dance Academy at 99 Melbourne Street.
  • Option 2: Near its original location in front of 75-77 Melbourne Street which is home to Clip Joint Salons, Eye Centre and Himalayan Kitchen.

Who we spoke with

Feedback was received via an online survey that was completed by 32 respondents who primarily lived in metropolitan Adelaide, who visit, commute, work or own a business within Melbourne Street.

How we engaged

Engagement included the following materials and methods:

  • Your Say page
  • Online survey
  • FAQs
  • Hard copy engagement information and survey packs available from the City of Adelaide Customer Centre, Libraries and Community Centres
  • Notification of public engagement to attendees of “The Future of Melbourne Street” small business gathering. This was held at the Lord Melbourne Hotel on 9 October 2023.
  • Email notification to approximately 100 Melbourne Street businesses (mostly between Jerningham Street and Mann Terrace) including the North Adelaide Precinct Coordinator, and President.
  • Contact email for written submissions
  • Contact number for phone call queries

Online survey

The online survey was available through the Your Say page on the City of Adelaide’s website. This webpage also included concept design drawings and FAQs about the two bus stop locations proposed.

What we heard

The engagement undertaken indicates there is strong support (26 of 32 participants) for the reinstatement of Bus Stop 4 on Melbourne Street. The survey did not however indicate a clearly favoured location for the reinstatement of Bus Stop 4.

Option 1 was slightly more favoured, with 18 participants (versus 15 participants for option 2) selecting that they agree or strongly agree with Bus Stop 4 being reinstated in the proposed location in front of LJR Dance Academy at 99 Melbourne Street. The key reason given for this location being favoured was due to a perceived positive impact on business/property. The key reason provided for not favouring this location (11 people disagreed or strongly disagreed) was the loss of car parking.

Option 2 was slightly less favoured as a location, with 15 participants who agreed or strongly agreed with the reinstatement of Bus Stop 4 in the proposed location (versus 18 participants for option 1). The primary reason provided by respondents favouring this location was because it would be conveniently placed where people wanted to get on and off the bus. The key reason provided for not wanting the reinstatement in this location was due to perceived impacts on business/properties.
