Project Update

The Dog and Cat Management Plan has been approved by the Dog and Cat Management Board and can be viewed here.

Project Information

We would like your feedback on our draft Dog and Cat Management Plan.

Previous plans have focussed on encouraging responsible pet ownership (including voluntary desexing and microchipping of pets) and minimising the negative impacts of dogs and cats in the City of Adelaide. This plan is in the same line, however is more concise due to its close alignment with recent amendments to the Dog and Cat Management Act 1995. For a summary of the changes to the Act please visit the Dog and Cat Management Board at http://www.dogandcatboard.com.au/changes-to-the-act.

Our vision for this Plan is for it to:

  • support a balanced environment for dog and cat ownership in the city

  • encourage ownership of, and interaction with dogs and cats

  • ensure that nuisance behaviour does not impact on our community.

Background

Council has a role in the promotion of desexing and microchipping of dogs and cats, as well as the registration of dogs.

The rules for owning cats and dogs are primarily set by State Parliament, however Council does have By-Laws relating to dogs and cats. To view these By-Laws please visit https://www.cityofadelaide.com.au/your-council/policies-papers/#B
