The Leigh Street Demonstration Project undertaken by the Department of Planning, Transport and Infrastructure (DPTI) with the support of Council, forms part of the State Government’s Vibrant Adelaide agenda and is aimed at enhancing the public realm and delivering greater prioritisation and amenities for pedestrians.
Leigh Street was closed to through traffic on 30 July 2012 as part of a six‐month trial to create a more pedestrian friendly environment. This trial period was later extended to 30 June 2013 to allow a more comprehensive analysis of the impact of the closure on vehicle, pedestrian and cyclist movements and to capture seasonal variations in activity.
