Project update - July 2021

The City of Adelaide Resident Survey will be done for the third year running in September/October 2021.

We received over 1,000 responses to this survey in 2020. Residents across the city shared their experiences of city living, rated their general wellbeing, gave their views on Council services, and told us what they do (and would like to do) to be environmentally sustainable at home. We also got ‘baseline’ data for measuring success in the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan.

We heard that:

  • 89% of respondents agreed that the city has public spaces that I feel safe to use, 69% agreed that Council is taking effective steps to protect the natural environment, and 77% agreed that the city is a place that is welcoming to people from diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • There is still work to be done to improve safety in the city. While many residents (76%) feel comfortable to walk to their closest main street in the evening, relatively few (34%) feel comfortable to walk to their nearest Park Land or Square.
  • The most important Council services to residents are:
    1. Asset maintenance
    2. Waste, natural resources and environmental services
    3. Arts, community development and civic services.
  • Those services were also rated as the best performing.
  • The most valued aspect of city living again related to the convenience of being close to everything: 62% of respondents made a comment about the city being convenient/close/accessible.
  • The ‘amenity’ of the city is also highly valued with the amenities most often called out being the Park Lands, public transport (including free transport and the Connector Bus), and the restaurants/cafes/pubs/bars.
  • In light of the COVID-19 experience, residents told us they were avoiding large crowds and that they expect sanitisation of facilities and more cleanliness in public places.
  • The lighting of pathways, shade/shelter, seating, and exercise loops/trails were the key facilities that respondents want to see more of in the Park Lands.

What we have heard from our residents has been used to improve service and program delivery and to track some of the measures of success in the 2020-2024 Strategic Plan. To view the full results, please click here.

    Project background and information

The City of Adelaide conducted the 2020 Resident Survey to find out more about residents who own or rent a home in Adelaide (5000) or North Adelaide (5006). Results will help shape the activities, programs and services of the City of Adelaide. This had extra significance as we worked to achieve operational savings of $20m for the financial year 01 July 2020 - 30 June 2021.

The survey covered various topics including:

    • Exercise, nutrition and sleep
    • Wellbeing and connection with others
    • Emergency preparedness
    • Access and inclusion
    • Services delivered by the City of Adelaide
    • Safety
    • City living
    • Park Lands
    • Sustainability (NEW to the 2020 survey!)

The survey took an estimated 30-40 minutes to complete. All responses remained anonymous – optional contact information at the conclusion of the survey was used only as stated and was not linked back to the survey responses/respondents.
