Work will start on Field Street in early 2024 and are expected to be completed by mid-2024. Council is committed to best managing disruption to businesses and residents during the works.
To maintain access to the street and undertake works, the street will often be single laned during construction. Full closures will be required at times, these will be communicated with stakeholders prior. Pedestrian access will be maintained at all times.
Background
This proposed upgrade follows on from the Wright Court and Field Street Streetscape Upgrades consultation that was conducted in 2018 and 2020. The upgrade was delayed due to the Covid pandemic and we are pleased to commence this project in 2024.

Consultation on proposed reconfiguration of traffic flow in Field Street from two-way to one-way
In 2020 we sought your feedback on the proposed reconfiguration of traffic flow in Field Street from two-way to one-way. Pursuant to section 32 of the South Australian Road Traffic Act 1961, the City of Adelaide gave notice that it is proposing to close Field Street, Adelaide between Gouger Street and Wright Street to all motor vehicles travelling in a northbound direction except bicycles, emergency services vehicles and City of Adelaide authorised vehicles (see Fig.1 below).
Fig.1. Proposed reconfiguration of Field Street to One-Way
The upgrade to the streetscape in Field Street is an objective of the City of Adelaide’s 2019/20 Integrated Business Plan (IBP). This proposed upgrade follows on from the Wright Court and Field Street Streetscape Upgrades consultation that was conducted between August and September 2018.
The Field Street Streetscape upgrade will incorporate many changes including the reconfiguration of traffic flow in Field Street from two-way to one-way and the planting of additional trees in the street.
The City of Adelaide undertook consultation from January 28 to February 28 2020 regarding a streetscape upgrade proposal for Field Street. The proposal covered the following elements:
The proposal covered the following elements:
As required by state legislation both proposals required public consultation before Council can approve the works proceeding.
The City of Adelaide undertook consultation from late January to late February 2020 regarding a streetscape upgrade proposal for Field Street. The proposal covered elements including altering the traffic to one way, as well as tree planting and other upgrades. We received a significant amount of feedback (329 visits to this page and 43 people providing feedback), which will now inform our design moving forward. The next steps for the project is to finalise the design by August 2020, before a decision will be made by Council as to whether to proceed with the upgrade.
Wright Court and Field Street Streetscape Upgrades
As part of our commitment to making Adelaide a greener and more sustainable capital city, we have committed to upgrading the streetscapes of Wright Court and Field Street. The upgrades provide an opportunity to enhance the existing character of the streets through a blend of commercial, residential and retail uses.
During May - June 2018 we asked for feedback on what could be included in the streetscape upgrades. Your feedback contributed to the development of a draft concept plan and street perspectives for the proposed upgrades, which will include the installation of 17 new trees.
In addition to the Your Say page we also held a drop-in session between 4pm - 7pm on 28 August 2018 at the Minor Works Building at 22 Stamford Court, Adelaide. The drop-in session was an opportunity to meet members of the project team and to provide feedback, or any further input on the concept for an upgrade to Wright Court and Field Street Streetscape.

The Wright Court component of the work was undertaken in the 2019/20 Financial Year.
The Field Street component will continue to have design investigations undertaken, for potential construction works in future Financial Years.
